WordPress Made Easy

How to Resize and Make Images Larger without Losing Quality

Have you ever tried to enlarge a photograph only to lose its quality in the process?

When you expand an image, it may appear hazy and amateurish. A picture is made up of hundreds of pixels, which become visible as the size of the image grows. As a result, the image is bland and low-quality.

We’ll show you how to resize photographs to make them larger without sacrificing quality in this article.

In WordPress, you may resize images to make them bigger.

When images are enlarged, why do they lose quality?

The most common image format on the internet is a bitmap. Bitmap image files are all JPEG and PNG files. Thousands of pixels make up a bitmap image. If you zoom in close enough, you can see the pixels as squares.

The word Bitmap comes from the fact that each of these pixels is mapped to a specific position on the image.

To resize an image, most image editing software shrinks or enlarges these pixels. This is why there is no noticeable quality loss when resizing an image to a smaller size. The reason for this is that certain pixels become even less apparent.

When you resize a picture in WordPress to make it larger, however, these enlarged pixels become more noticeable, resulting in a hazy and pixelated image.

The solution is to adjust the attributes of each enlarged pixel to match those of its neighboring pixel. Fractal Interpolation, or simply Fractals, is the name given to this procedure. When an image is expanded using this method, the effect is significantly better.

Let’s look at how to resize images on your WordPress website using the most popular image editing applications.

Method 1: Using the GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program)

GIMP is a free alternative to Adobe Photoshop and Affinity Photo, which are both paid programs. It can also be used to expand photographs while preserving their quality. However, the outcome will not be as nice as Perfect Resize, which we’ll show you in way 3 below.

The free software must first be downloaded and installed on your computer. It’s compatible with both Mac and Windows computers.

After that, open Gimp and go to Image » Scale Image to resize the image.

Select the option to scale the image.

Then, to set your desired measurements, input the width and height.

Now, under the ‘Quality’ section, select Cubic as the Interpolation method, and after you’re through, click the ‘Scale’ button.

Change the image scale settings

That’s it; you may now save the expanded image in a variety of formats, including PNG, JPEG, HTML, and others.

Method 2: Enlarge Images Using Irfanview

Irfanview is a lightweight picture editor that is also free to use. It is exclusively accessible for Windows-based operating systems and offers a more intelligent way to resize and enlarge photographs.

Simply open your image in Irfanview and select Image » Resize/Resample from the drop-down menu.

IrfanView may be used to resize images.

The picture resizes popup window will appear as a result of this action. To begin, define the width and height of the image you want to use in the ‘Set new size’ section.

After that, go to the ‘Size method’ section and choose to resample. From the filter dropdown menu, select ‘Lanczos (slowest)’.

When you’re finished, check the box next to ‘Apply Sharpen After Resample’ and click OK.

Change the image resizing options

The image will now be resized by Irfanview, and you can save it to your PC.

You may have noticed that free tools aren’t particularly excellent at scaling images to make them larger. However, you can increase photographs while minimizing quality loss by tweaking sharpness and image contrast.

However, a premium tool can be used to ensure that the image remains crisp and clear when enlarged.

Method 3: Use a Professional Software to Enlarge Images

ON1 Resize AI, formerly known as Perfect Resize, is a program that allows you to resize your photographs intelligently. It also has a comprehensive set of image editing capabilities.

It comes as a standalone application as well as a plugin for Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom, Capture One, and Apple Photos.
